New students take placement tests after applying for admission and must complete placement requirements according to the degree, certificate, or course they intend to register in. Please note that all Degree-Seeking students must complete placement requirements before registering for courses, and all students must satisfy course prerequisites before registering in a specific course.
Placement tests are required for all Degree Seeking students, some Certificates please see this list for more details , and for any student seeking to register in a course that has a placement prerequisite such as English Composition, Mathematics, and many other classes.
Students may not register for the placement test until they have completed a Moraine Valley admission application. Any coursework that meets college-level placement will be entered as an exemption so the student will not need to complete that portion of the placement test. Accuplacer exams take on average about one hour to complete. ALEKS exams typically take minutes to complete. Results of placement exams are available immediately after testing. Other placement measures — such as high school GPA and high school course completion exemptions — are considered valid for placement for 18 months from the date of high school graduation or course completion.
Students who score a or above on the Evidence-Based Reading and Writing portion of the SAT test are exempt from the Reading and Writing portion of the placement test.
Students who score a or above on the SAT math test are exempt from the mathematics portion of the placement test. Students who score a 20 or above in mathematics are exempt from the mathematics placement test. High school unweighted cumulative grade point average of 3. GED score of or higher. Students may be required to complete developmental reading courses in addition to regular college-credit courses. A valid photo ID is required for placement testing. You will not be permitted to test without appropriate identification. Acceptable forms of identification include:.
Counselors will review your test results with you and assist you in making decisions regarding the best course options related to your placements as well as your choice of major or program. New full-time students are required to meet with a counselor for this purpose during the mandatory Orientation programs. You can pick up a copy of your Compass score report as soon as you finish the Compass test.
Discussing your test results and course selection with a counselor prior to registration is strongly encouraged for all students whether new or continuing—and part-time students as well as full-time students. One re-test is allowed after the first test. The retest must be completed prior to or during the first week of a math, English, reading or ESL class.
Once you have started a math, English, reading or ESL sequence, you must continue with the sequence until course requirements have been satisfied. Remember—once you enroll and start a course sequence, you must complete the entire sequence—regardless of your test score expiration date s.

Students that are not TSI complete must take the developmental course prior to taking a college level course.
Prior to the first enrollment, every student must either take a placement test or have transcripts evaluated for the appropriate placement into courses.
If you do not test into college-level course work and have not completed development course work at a previous institution, developmental education courses will be made available to assist you in meeting institutional academic prerequisites. You must receive academic advising prior to registration until you have successfully completed the developmental education program or have re-tested out of developmental education. You may retake the placement test to try to place into college-level course work or higher into the developmental education sequence.
At the top level of the ESL levels, you can start taking credit academic courses without taking remedial courses. New students are strongly encouraged to participate in academic test preparation to assure best results on the TSI. Or, if you are not satisfied with you TSI results, you may request a retest to opt-out of developmental education and into college-level course work, or to place into a more advanced level allowing for earlier satisfaction of academic prerequisites.
PREP offers computer assisted tutorials in math, reading, and writing. Each section has 25 questions and a 20 minute time limit 80 minutes max test time. Students may not have to take all four sections, depending on their skill level.
Students must wait three months before retesting. It is recommended that if you do not take the recommended course within one year of testing, you should retest and scores are not transferrable. The Accuplacer ESL exam assesses students who speak English as a second language in order to prepare them for a successful academic experience.
The exam is a multiple-choice format except for WritePlacer, the written essay assessment. There's no time limit. The test is adaptive. Questions are presented based on individual's skill level.
